HOWTO: re-enable Windows Updates after XP Repair process

Symptom:
After you’ve repaired a Windows XP (SP2) installation using recovery media, any update from Windows Update or Microsoft Update refuses to install. You’ll end up downloading 50+ updates that simply won’t install.

Solution:
Re-register the Windows Update services.

  1. Open Notepad
  2. Copy and Paste in the following (as is):
    regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

  3. Save as "fixp.cmd" (set Save as type to All files) to somewhere convenient
  4. Run the file
  5. Head over to Windows Update to install your downloaded updates

This worked for me. If it doesn’t help your problem might be a virus or your anti-virus application(s). Try updating in Safe Mode. Thanks to Windowssecrets.com.
